More photos are coming in from the World Literacy Summit, in Oxford.  It was my immense privilege to not only present our research about boys’ literacy but to introduce the key speaker event of the Summit – the interview between Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and Jelly Roll.

Never heard of Jelly Roll?  Read our article and not only impress the teenagers, but fill your cup with a wonderful literacy story.

From Incarceration to Education

Rising from a troubled past marked by addiction, incarceration, and personal struggles, Jelly Roll has turned his life around through music, earning widespread acclaim for his deeply emotional lyrics and raw storytelling. With a top-three debut on the Billboard 200 and multiple awards to his name, his music resonates with those facing hardship, offering a message of hope, redemption, and healing.

While serving time  from aged 15, Jelly Roll experienced a turning point that would lay the foundation for his later success. He began to reflect deeply on his life choices and started pursuing self-education. He read extensively, wrote lyrics, and began to channel his energy into personal growth and creative expression. This period marked a shift in his mindset—from one focused on survival in the streets to one seeking redemption and purpose. His passion for music became a lifeline, offering him a way to process his pain and envision a different future.

Jelly Roll opens up about his rise to success, reflecting on how music has been a healing force not only for him but for the countless fans who resonate with his lyrics.

Listen to this short excerpt with Jay Shetty where he talks about the powerful role of literacy and education in his life, from being imprisoned from age 15…

Beyond music, Jelly Roll is known for his philanthropic efforts, including supporting at-risk youth and visiting rehabilitation centers. At this year’s World Literacy Summit, Jelly Roll was awarded the ‘Goodwill Literacy Ambassador Award’.
