As the holidays approach, it’s the perfect time to nurture a love of reading by creating a cosy book nook at home. A dedicated reading space can turn books into an adventure zone—and make reading feel less like homework and more like fun.

Think comfy beanbag or gaming-style chair, soft lighting like a clip-on lamp or LED strip, and a small shelf stacked with books that match his interests—whether that’s sport, survival, mysteries, science fiction, or laugh-out-loud humour. Add a few personal touches, like posters of favourite team or characters, and a blanket for those long reading sessions.

When boys have a space that feels like their own, they’re more likely to settle in, relax, and get lost in a good story. A reading nook can be the launchpad for building confidence, imagination, and lifelong literacy skills—all while making these holidays screen-free (at least for a while!).

Don’t forget to utilise your local library to stock up on books or magazines before the holidays start so that you have a book nook stocked with reading options.

Here’s a Checklist to get you started:

✅ Comfy chair or beanbag

✅ Soft lighting (lamp or LED strip)

✅ Shelf or crate of boy-friendly books

✅ Posters of his favourite team/character decor

✅ Warm blanket or cushions

✅ Bookmarks & a reading log

✅ Quiet corner away from distractions
